November 2019 - Paper published in Nuclear Engineering and Design. This paper describes the fluid structure interaction in a 7-rods bundle and, more specifically, a benchmarking of numerical simulations (done by NRG and UGent0 with experimental data obtained in our group. Click here for the paper.

October 2019 - Paper published in the International Journal of Heat and Mass Transfer! This paper describes migratory flow caused by helicoid wire spacers in rod bundles of liquid metal reactors. The study covers both experiments and theory. Click here for the paper.

September 2019 - Just received this nice group picture of the International Meeting of Specialists on Heat Transfer and Fluid Dynamics at Supercritical Pressure in July in Beijing at the Tsinghua University. The next meeting will be organised by us in Delft!

September 2019 - After 6 months of hard work in our group on LDA in a supercritical flows in serpentine channels, Yan returns home to Beijing to finish her PhD at Tsinghua university. She did an impressive job and we really hope to cooperate soon again. Yan, have a safe trip back and thanks for all the work!

August 2019 - Paper published in the Journal of Supercritical Fluids. A new friction-heat transfer analogy for the prediction of heat transfer to turbulent fluids at supercritical pressure is presented. This analogy is based on the observation that the predominent events thatdetermine the turbulent heat flux known as hot ejections and cold sweeps have different thermophys-ical properties. This observation is used to derive a new friction-heat transfer analogy, which we call the ejection-sweep analogy. Click here for the paper.

Februari 2019 - Another superb news! Our European proposal SAMOSAFER (Severe Accident Modeling and Safety Assessment for Fluid-fuel Energy Reactors) have been granted! Together with German, French, Swiss, Czech and Italian partners we will continue our work on the Thorium driven Molten Salt Reactor. This project is a continuation of the current SAMOFAR project. The fact that this proposal is granted means that Europe is considering this reactor as a serious future energy source for sustainable nuclear power.

OTP TTW-isotopes

November 2018 - Great news! Our proposal "Fast and Efficient Purification of Medical Isotopes by Micro-fluidic Extraction” has been accepted for a TTW OTP grant! Three PhD students will work on an innovative technology to separate and purify isotopes by microfluid extraction. They will work at the departments of Radiation Science and Technology (prof. Elisabeth Oehlke, dr. Antonia Denkova, prof. Bert Wolterbeek and dr. Martin Rohde) and Chemical Engineering (dr. Volkert Steijn and prof. Ruud van Ommen). Project leader will be Martin Rohde. Members of the user committe are URENCO, NRG, TRIUMF and UMCG.

October 2018 - On October 2-4 we hosted, the combined SESAME/MYRTHEprogress  meeting. Almost 50 participants from institutes such as NRG, CEA, ENEA, KIT, PSI, UCL and SCK.CEN were present to show the progress of their work. The bundle is partially made transparent by using the refractive-index matching FEP material. In this way, the internals of the rod bundle are accessible to optical techniques (in this case: laser doppler anemometry and particle image velocimetry).

January 2018 - Valentina Valori obtained the Dr title after her defence and  years of hard work on PIV in supercritical Rayleigh Benard flows. Promotors are prof. T.H.J.J. van der Hagen and prof. J. Westerweel, co-promotor is Dr. Martin Rohde. The PhD thesis of Valentina can be found here.

Obviously, after the opening, there were drinks and snacks to celebrate this great event!

October 2017 - Paper published in Nuclear Engineering and Design. The work shows flow phenomena that typically occur in rod bundles: coherent flow structures. The techniques used are Laser Doppler Anemometry and Refractive Index Matching.. Main author is Fulvio Bertocchi. Here is the link to the open access paper.

This  study describes a microfluidic system with which it was possible to determine the kinetic association rate constants for the formation of [177Lu]Lu-DOTA-TATE under conditions currently used for clinical production. August 2017 - Sara received one of the Applied Sciences Grants in the field of an Ultrasonic Technique for the Measurement of Viscosity and Density of Molten Salt Fuel. Congratulations! This grant is shared with our colleagues from the ImPhys department. Scientists involved are Sara Mastromarino, Martin Rohde, Jan-Leen Kloosterman, Eric Verschuur, Nico de Jong, Martin Verweij and Koen Van Dongen.

April 2017 - Paper has been pblised in Nuclear Engineering and Design on the stability of natural circulation Boiling Water Reactors. This type of reactors are safer than conventional ones because the flow is driven by gravity instead of mechanical pumps. March 2017 - In Petten, the 5th SESAME progress meeting was held in Petten, The Netherlands. The 23 partners came together to present and discuss their work. Fulvio Bertocchi presented the coherent vortex street he found with the help of LDA.

February 2017 - A paper has been accepted by Physical Review Fluids in the field of turbulent heat transfer in an annulus at supercritical pressure. Results were obtained by a Direct Numerical Simulation of supercritical CO2 flow with constant (but different) wall temperatures. PIV

October 2016 - For the first time, a two-dimensional flow field in a supercritical fluid could be measured. The figure shows the time-averaged, two-dimensional velocity field in a supercritical fluid (R23). Measurements have been performed by Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV). Due to the high pressure (57 bars) it is difficult to make the flow field visible for the camera and accessible by the laser light. Due to the large density differences in the fluid, light refracts, causing blurring of the signal. Researcher: Valentina Valori
